Hyperconverged Infrastructure for Agile, Non-Stop IT Operations

Future-focused Jamaican IT leaders – such as Chief Technology Officers (CTOs) and Chief Information Officers (CIOs) – are looking to Hyperconverged Infrastructure (HCI) when modernising the data centre for their companies.

Info Exchange has partnered with NUTANIX creators of enterprise hyperconvergence to bring this solution to Jamaican companies.  Hyperconvergence, an enterprise cloud solution, seamlessly combines compute, storage, and networking into a resilient turnkey appliance, that runs any application.  This architecture for the modern data centre combines the simplicity and agility of the public cloud with the security and control of a private cloud, and offers potential savings in IT operations of up to 60 per cent.

Traditional data centre infrastructure are typically configured in silos which can lead to bottlenecks in the system as the business demands change.   This design infrastructure is often complex and extremely difficult to scale and manage. According to Yevgeniy Sverdlik of Datacenterknowledge.com “ Hyperconvergence is the latest step in the now multiyear pursuit of infrastructure that is flexible and simpler to manage, or as Butler (Gartner Analyst) put it, a centralized approach to “tidying up” data center infrastructure. Earlier attempts include integrated systems and fabric infrastructure, and they usually involve SANs, blade servers, and a lot of money upfront.”

Gustavo Sosa, Nutanix senior engineer says “Hyperconvergence takes all the complexity of the typical datacentre and combines it into a single platform, that is fully distributed, highly available and self healing”

Four Jamaican industry leaders have already committed to the Info Exchange/Nutanix hyperconverged infrastructure, three of which are already operational. The largest implementation being at the Jamaica Broilers group (JBG). Undel Williams CIO of Info Exchange had this to say about the non-stop capabilities of the Nutanix solution. “The system has no single points of failure, meaning that no one activity can bring the whole thing down. This company has an agile infrastructure that is always up and always available.”

A great feature of the Nutanix HCI is its built-in analytics capacity monitoring, where trends in the progression of the compute workload is continuously evaluated. With this aid, CTOs/CIOs can then predict precisely how much more storage, ram and compute will be needed to meet the future demands of the organisation, taking the guess work out of future resource procurements. And because a HCI system is software defined, it is easy to adjust to business demands and to grow capacity.

Respected IT research outfit Gartner, which gave Nutanix a Magic Quadrant Leader rating for its HCI in 2018, is predicting that by 2020, 20 per cent of business critical applications currently deployed on three-tier IT infrastructure will transition to HCI.

In elaborating more on the JBG implementation, Williams explained, “Info Exchange was able to deliver a solution that was exactly what Jamaica Broilers needed for now and into the future. We know IT leaders don’t like to touch their data centres – the nervous system of the organisation. But JBG, took the leap and transitioned to Nutanix and now they can focus even more on business productivity, making operations cost efficient and helping the business optimize the systems it has,” Williams concluded.

Definition of Hyperconverged Infrastructure – Hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) is a category of scale-out software-integrated infrastructure that applies a modular approach to compute, network and storage on standard hardware, leveraging distributed, horizontal building blocks under unified management. HCI virtualizes all of the elements of conventional “hardware-defined” systems and includes at a minimum, virtualized computing, a virtualised SAN (software-defined storage) and virtualized networking (software-defined networking). HCI typically runs on industry-standard commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) servers.
